What is Ramipril (Altace)?

ACE inhibitors prevent an enzyme in your body from producing angiotensin II, a substance in your body that affects your cardiovascular system by narrowing your blood vessels and releasing hormones that can raise your blood pressure.

This narrowing can cause high blood pressure and force your heart to work harder. ACE inhibitors help relax these blood vessels.

How to use Ramipril (Altace)

  • taking pillTake Ramipril (Altace) as prescribed on your medication bottle. Do not take more or less or for longer than recommended by your doctor.
  • Take Ramipril (Altace) as a whole tablet with water or you may open the capsule and sprinkle the medicine into a half-cup (4 ounces) of water, apple juice, or applesauce to make swallowing easier. Swallow without chewing. You may store the mixture for up to 24 hours at room temperature, or up to 48 hours in a refrigerator.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • You may need regular blood pressure tests at your doctors office.
  • You may need to briefly stop using Ramipril (Altace) before having surgery, so discuss with your surgeon.
  • Ramipril (Altace) should be stored at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
  • If you miss a dose of Ramipril (Altace), take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating can cause you to become dehydrated. This can lead to very low blood pressure, electrolyte disorders, or kidney failure while you are taking Ramipril (Altace).

Other drugs may interact with Ramipril (Altace), including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products, so discuss with your health care providers all medications you are taking.

What to know before using Ramipril (Altace):

If any of the following conditions apply to you, discuss with your doctor before taking Ramipril (Altace):

  • kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis)kidneys
  • allergy to Ramipril (Altace) or any other Ace Inhibitor
  • liver disease
  • if you are also taking telmisartan (Micardis)
  • diabetes
  • connective tissue disease such as Marfan syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, lupus, scleroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis
  • pregnant
  • breast feeding
  • Diabetics and those with kidney disease should not use Ramipril (Altace) together with any medication that contains aliskiren (Amturnide, Tekturna, Tekamlo, Valturna).

Side effects of Ramipril (Altace):

Stop using Ramipril (Altace) and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

  • Blurred vision
  • confusion
  • dizziness, faintness, or light headed when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position
  • sweating
  • unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Arm, back, or jaw pain
  • chest pain or discomfort
  • chest tightness or heaviness
  • chills
  • cloudy urine
  • cold sweats
  • decrease in urine output or decrease in urine-concentrating ability
  • fainting
  • fast or irregular heartbeat
  • nausea
  • shortness of breath

Less serious side effects may include:

  • Cough
  • Diarrhea
  • feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
  • sensation of spinning
  • vomiting
